Christian Keyboarding - Maybe I am Historical!
Mood:  not sure
Topic: Homeschool Product Review

Photobucket

Believe it or not, I do remember a day before computers. Hmmm ~ maybe I am historical after all?!? I used to love to type. I would get out my mom's old college manual typewriter, and begin a novel or some such thing. Of course I would have to hunt and pick to find the correct keys. Then, if I made a mistake, I would have to use one of those old white out pencils to cover over the mistake so that I could correct it.

In high school, I was a college prep person, so I didn't have to take all of the business classes like book keeping etc. but all college prep kids did have to take a couple of semesters of typing. I loved it, and loved the way that it improved my skills so that I didn't have to hunt and peck anymore.

Nowadays, of course, typewriters are obsolete. Everyone has a computer, and even toddlers are using them. Kids in elementary school are now taking keyboarding classes so that they can learn to type correctly from the start. I had been looking for something like that for my kids. I had even searched the internet for free keyboarding programs that they could use. When I found that, as a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, I was getting free downloads for Keyboarding for the Christian School and Keyboarding for the Christian School Elementary Version from Christian Keyboarding in order to try out and review on my blog, I was thrilled.

Photobucket

Both of the courses are well written by Leanne Beitel and are essentially the same, except for one main difference. The Elementary Version, written for for fifth grade on down, is more colorful, with a colored picture of the keyboard row that you are using for that lesson. It also has larger type, and is spaced differently so that it is easier to read. That makes it spread over two pages whereas the Regular Version, for sixth grade on up, is all on the same page.

Both begin by teaching the proper posture typing and proper way of holding your fingers. They start by using the main middle row keys where your fingers naturally set and then advance to the outer keys and the rows above and below. The Elementary Version finishes with teaching the student how to use the bold, italic, underline and

center Smile keys.

The Regular Version, however, goes much, much further. It goes on to teach the student how to type a cover page, reports, letters, tables, and more. One slight word of caution, though, both courses use Microsoft Word as their basis. This only matters, though, when it comes to the special functions, and, even then, Microsoft Word is the standard for word processors, and most other word processing programs are very similar.

Keyboarding for the Christian School and Keyboarding for the Christian School Elementary Version are just what they say. They are Keyboarding courses that are Christian in nature. That is probably what I like best about this curriculum. From day one, there are encouraging and relevant Bible verses at the top of each page of the Elementary Version, and verses scattered throughout the Regular lessons. Better yet, when the student gets to the point of typing sentences - Lesson 18 on both - they don't just type regular sentences, they type Bible verses!

These courses are exactly what I was looking for. It's something that reminds me of the typing course that served me well when I was in high school but, is very Christian in nature. Both Joshua (Elementary Course) and John Allen (Regular Course) are really enjoying using this. I'm really excited that they are learning keyboarding a lot earlier than I did. I would definitely recommend this course for homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers alike.

The elementary course is currently priced at $12.95 with the regular version priced at $15.95, but the website is offering both courses for $22.00. AND, there is also a $5.00 of coupon code for any order of $12.95 or more. Christian Keyboarding also offers other specialized keyboarding courses for things such as creating tables or columns. You can find it all by just clicking here or on any one of the hi-lighted links above. As usual, you can find out what the other TOS Crew members are saying about this product by clicking here. Happy keyboarding!

Men's Monday Meme - Question 6 - My Response
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Men's Monday Meme

Here is the original question:

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Colossians 3:18 New International Bible

What do you think that the above Bible verse means, and how do you apply it (if you do) in your household?

I have heard so many opinions on this controversial subject. Everyone seems to have a comment to make. Some women get angry at the very idea that the Bible seems to be saying that they aren't equal to their husbands. Some men seem to think that this means that their wives should be meek, submissive things that stay barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. Neither view is what I feel is a good view to take.

So many times folks seem to only focus on Colossians 3:18 and they don't bother to read any further. Let's review the key verse and the following verse:

18Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

Enough has been said over the years about verse 18, but I want to talk a little about verse 19.

What does it mean for a man to love his wife? How would you want to be treated by someone who loved you? Would you want to be treated with respect? Would you want folks to be kind to you instead of harsh? Would you want people to ask your opinion rather than order you to do something? I think any man or woman would say yes to all three of those questions. I don't think that there is a verse in the Bible that would contradict any of those things.

That's how I think that a husband should treat his wife. If a husband really obeys God's command to love his spouse, then he is going to treat her with respect and kindness and value her opinion. He isn't going to treat her like a subordinate.

God made each sex a special way. He created women with the necessity to be loved and to be shown love. Although both sexes need that, the woman probably has more of a need for that emotion than a man. I'm not talking just about sexual love, although that is part of it. A woman just needs to feel like she is cared for and loved.

In the same way, the man needs to feel like he is someone. He needs to feel worthy.  Again, I'm not saying that he should be treated like a king, but he needs to feel like he has made something of himself ~ he's accomplished something. That's something that a woman needs as well, but it is probably more so felt in a man.

Now, I also know that some women do things that make them hard to love, and many men do things that aren't respectable, but those two things are things that I feel the two different sexes desire.

It's kind of like the opposite of a vicious circle. It's a good circle. If the man treats a woman with true love ~ I mean he really loves and respects her, then a woman will do anything for her man. Doing anything for her man will only generate more love that her husband will give her.

God created a man and a women to compliment each other. Not for one to dominate the other. He gave both sexes specific jobs and characteristics that will meld with their spouses characteristics to make one perfect unit. It's our own sinful desires and disobedience that makes the unit imperfect. If we truly followed the Bible and the guidelines it gives for each individual to follow, then a man and wife ~ nay, I say, the world would live harmoniously.

Twenty Four Hour Bonus on the Men's Monday Meme!
Mood:  spacey
Topic: Men's Monday Meme

Ok folks! I'd like to say I'm giving an extension this week because of the great popularity of my new Hot Topic - Men's Monday Meme. Or, that my blogs so busy that the server crashed. Or, I've been invited to speak to congress about homeschooling. BUT...the truth of the matter is...I'm just exhausted!

Today has been one of those days when either the mission phone (it runs into our house) and/or the house phone and/or my cell phone rang at the same time. And, it happened two or three times. We also had to go on rescue missions three times today for mission folks who needed a ride, or whose car broke down. We even got a knock on the door from a guy with a truck load of computer monitors, scanners, and printers, that he wanted to donate to the mission. I haven't checked any of them yet, but he promised they all still worked Undecided! Top that off with a blizzard today, a full day of homeschooling, four loads of laundry, and Jacob not sleeping well and being up half the night and you get a very tiring day. I just don't have it in me to think about my response to the question and post a new question tonight. It will have to wait until tomorrow.

So, it isn't the popularity of my meme or my blog, and it definitely isn't my being called to speak in the congress but you do get an extra 24 hours. I hope you all join in!

Ministry Focus - Our Ministry - Good News Mission
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Ministry

The mission getting a new paint job this past October!

Part One ~ How It All Began!

Although I realize that this blog is much more than a ministry blog, I realized that unless you read our prayer letters, you don't necessarily know what we do here at Good News Mission.

Good News Mission was started about 12 years ago when two couples felt that the Lord was calling them to begin a ministry to the low income housing folks that live in our small town. They heard that an old "mom and pop" grocery store with a house attached was going up for auction right across the street from the housing authority office so that went to a local doctor and asked if he would be willing to bid on it. He agreed, won the bid, and the ministry began in the attached house until the store front could be remodeled.

Sarah and I began helping them out about six months after they opened. At that time the ministry consisted of a breakfast on Sunday morning followed by a Bible Study. Usually the kids and adults were seperated into age groups. They also began a clothes closet in the basement that was opened before and after the meal and Bible study. Sarah and I soon began a Kid's Bible Club on Tuesday Evenings to compliment the Sunday morning studies.

After about two years, the store front was finally remodeled enough for the services to be moved into it, and the ministry was large enough to need a full time director. Sarah and I had been working as full time missionaries working at Cedar Lake Camp, but the time was right for us to leave serving at that ministry and begin working full time at Good News Mission.

~To be continued next week with ~ Good News Mission Over the Years.

Apology and Some New Thru 30 Notes
Mood:  lazy
Topic: Bible Reading & Devotions

Sorry you all. I've focused more on my Blogspot (shhhh...you know, the other blog) today, so I haven't gotten anything written on this one. I was going to answer one of Redhead Riter's "Tell the Truth Thursday" questions, but the MckLinky was already closed so I couldn't add a post to it. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I did, however, catch up a little (still not totally caught up) on my New Thru 30 reading and posted some notes. Click here for the link. Talk to you all agian tomorrow.
