Rappin' at the Mission!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Ministry

Mrs. Lass, our great friend and fellow missionary, brought some help for day camp this week - two of her grand daughters and two teenage boys. The boys are two of seven boys that were adopted into a fantastic family that live close to Mrs. Lass. She works with the brothers and any other youth or child that comes to the Bible study that the boys' parents lead in their home. The younger of the two, 18 year old John, has been helping lead games and has been a great fixer upper for us. Ramon, his 20 year old brother, has been helping with crowd control and...he just happens to be a fantastic Christian rapper. He is giving a half hour concert on Wednesday if you are close enough to come Smile. If not, John Allen taped him giving a preview to the kids at day camp today. It's not great quality (we don't have a great video camera) but it's good enough. Enjoy - more may be coming later!

Oh! The Strange Ways Our Children Learn!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: The Kids

The other day, out of the blue, Joshua decided to play a flag game with me. He would describe a state or country flag and I would guess where it was from. Joshua, for those of you don't know, is our 10 year old (third grade) asperger's child (on the autism spectrum).

At the beginning he was describing our state flag, the U.S flag, the Canadian flag...flags that he has been exposed to. Then, all of a sudden he described a flag that was white with a red circle - the Japanese flag...I thought, "Hmmm. That's interesting. I didn't know he knew that." Still, the Japanese flag is a fairly familiar flag.

Then, he asked me if I knew what country had a blue flag with a "little England flag" in the corner. I was stumped! First of all, I didn't know he knew what the Flag of England looked like, then, because I couldn't think of the flag he was talking about. I answered "Australia". "Nope". Then I thought "New Zealand?" No again. Both of those are blue with a "little England flag" in the corner but those weren't the one he was thinking of. Finally I gave up. He answered "The flag of Fiji!"

I asked "How in the world do you know what the flag of Fiji looks like?" He said that's where Jimmy Snuka is from. Jimmy Snuka is a professional wrestler. Asperger's kids can get fixated on things and learn all that they can about certain topics. Some folks call them "little professors" because they can be extra knowledgeable about topics that fascinate them. Joshua can tell you all about helicopters and, if he sees one, can tell you the type of helicopter it is, because that was a phase he went through. He's also gone through a football phase and, when he was young, a Thomas the Train phase. Ask him about one of those things and he can tell you all about them Smiley .

Anyway, lately it's been professional wrestling. I never thought I would allow my kids to watch professional wrestling until a little old lady started to come to the mission that we run. She faithfully watches professional wrestling and got my boys interested. So, in order for them to carry on a conversation with dear Miss Glenda, we allow them to watch under our supervision. Well, Joshua got hooked, and, yep, is going through a professional wrestling phase. For Christmas Grandma bought him a professional wrestling encyclopedia that he has devoured. It is literally in pieces. We need to buy him another one. In the encyclopedia they have the flag of the country that a wrestler is from. That's where he learned all of these flags. Smiley

Have you ever heard of the phrase "strike while the iron is hot"? This fall we are going to be doing unit studies of the countries where the different wrestlers are from. Should be interesting! You never know where your kids are going to learn things!

The Reviews - They Will Be A Coming!
Mood:  happy
Topic: Homeschool Product Review

A few weeks ago, before all of my computer problems, I started writing a post about our favorite review products from last year. Well, as I said, all of our computers went down at once. Finally, I have my computer back! In fact, I'm typing on it as we speak!

The end of the year wrap up post never got finished - at least not yet, but I do have an announcement to make. I've been selected to serve my third year on the TOS Homeschool Review. For most of the time I've been the only male on the crew, but this year there are two more men joining us, so you'll have to make sure you click on the link that I include in all of my reviews that takes you to the TOS Crew Blog where you'll find what other crew members thought about the different products.

In fact, check the blog frequently during the year because I don't review every single product that comes the crew's way. There are many, many more great products that just don't fit into the Tinkel family demographics. Here's the link - http://homeschoolcrew.com/ . Why don't you save it as one of your favorites. When you visit, check out the left hand column where it talks about all of the products that are "On Deck" for this coming year. I can't wait to get started! Happy Home Educating!

Well, after having some horrible computer problems (don't you just hate computer problems?) I'm finally back. Well, kind of back at least. For a little while I had no computer at all! Now, at least, I have my old Dell up and running and my Acer should be fixed and back with in a couple of days! So, I'm able to blog again! And boy do I have a lot to blog about.

  • The boys went to Arkansas last weekend for the National BB Gun Championship. I'll have some pictures to post and info. soon.
  • John Allen can't wait to begin shooting air rifles.
  • I've started this great new Bible study.
  • We are in the midst of our summer day camps, here at the mission. Pictures from our day camps will be coming soon as well.
  • We're getting ready for a new season of reviews on the homeschool crew. That's always exciting.
  • I've been reading some great books. Can't wait to tell you about them!
  • My poor Compassion International kids have been neglected. I need to send them a note and blog about them as well.
  • And there's even more than that!
So, you see, there is a lot to catch up on. I hope you dear readers haven't given up on me. I may have to start another blog every day for a year challenge again! Who knows?!?

Computer Problems Again
Mood:  don't ask
Topic: General
Yep. I'm having computer problems yet again! In fact, right now we have no computers working well at all. I'm typing this on my tablet. Not bad, huh? Unfortunately it takes forever and I'm not sure if I can do pictures, so pray that one of them will get fixed soon. I'll keep you all updated and try to add little blips now and again to keep my blog going.
