Please Pray About Our Prayer!
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Ministry

Believe it or not, we have been the directors of Good News Mission for over 10 years now. It just seems like yesterday that we volunteered to help out - never knowing that it would lead to this.

Sarah and my prayer has always been for the low income folks that we minister to would grow strong in the Lord and that they would lean on Him to help them in the situations that they are in. Sarah especially has been working with the women - she calls them "my ladies" - for these many years and has seen much growth.

I have been convicted for the last few months to take the folks of the mission to a new level in their walk with the Lord. A couple of weeks ago the Lord put a thought in my mind that really worked out in a neat way. I have always been interested in the way the Lord uses numbers in the Bible. The numbers 7 and 12 are used a lot but when God put that thought in my mind, it came with the number 40. Forty is also used many times - it rained for 40 days and 40 nights during the great flood, the Israelites were punished to wander 40 years in the wilderness, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert praying and fasting, there are 40 days between Easter and Pentecost. Forty seems to be very important, and listen to this!

God impressed upon me that I should challenge the folks 40 days of Prayer and I should present it the following Sunday. Here is where it gets really neat. I looked at the calendar to see when the 40 days would start and end. The next Sunday was November the 21st. There were 9 days left in November and there are 31 days in December which means that there were exactly 40 days left in the year!

So, Good News Mission is praying out the year! I challenged the adults to pray by themselves, with their spouses and with their families. I challenged them to let their kids see them pray and hear them pray. I challenged them to pray on their knees if they could. I urged them to encourage one another by calling or texting each other and reminding them to pray. They were to pray for each other, the mission, the projects, the town and then on up to our nation and world. They were to pray for specifics, not just these "Now I lay me down to sleep" type things. And, they were not to forget to praise God.

We have taught on prayer before, but this is really the first time we have presented this type of challenge. The next Tuesday at Bible Club, I passed out these reminder cards to hang on their refrigerators:

Now I am asking you. Please pray for Good News Mission and the people we serve. For some of the folks that attend, this is a big step for them but they really need this challenge. Living in a low income housing area is not easy. There are drugs. There is alcohol. There is sexual promiscuity. There are financial woes - some of their own making and some not. We have to deal with these things regularly as the directors of the mission. Please pray that this 40 day challenge will make an impact. Pray also for Sarah and I and our family as we minister to these folks. We really appreciate all of the support that you have given us over the years. Some of the readers of this blog know us personally, some have just stumbled upon my humble writings and visit every once in a while, but many of you pray for us regularly. Please don't stop. We really covet your prayers. Thank you for them.

Tim

An Apology, A Prayer Request, and More Books!
Mood:  d'oh
Topic: General

Sorry about the unusual post that must have happened sometime today. The one with the book Banner to the Sky. I was experimenting with my Vision Forum affiliate membership stuff and was trying to create a link to all of the VF books that we are reading or are going to read in the near future. Well, if you tried to click on the book, you would find that the link didn't go anywhere, so my experiment didn't work. I didn't mean for it to get posted but somehow it did. Sorry.

We are still at Grandma's house. I'm leaving tomorrow morning early with the boys to get them to therapies and Dr. appointments scheduled tomorrow. Then on to check on the house and spend the night there. Sarah is staying here to be with mom at her out patient appointment at the hospital. Pray for Mom. She is having her heart shocked back into rhythm tomorrow again. They did that a couple of weeks ago but the insurance wouldn't pay for the medicine she was supposed to take to keep it back in rhythm. They finally approved it, but too late for this go around. She will have the procedure done in the morn and then hopefully the medicine will keep it in rhythm. She's nervous, so any prayers would be appreciated.

Okay, I mentioned books earlier in this post. Went back to the used book store today. Spent two dollars and came away with three books. That doesn't usually happen. Actually only paid for one. The other two were in the free barrel outside. You can find some good stuff in that free barrel! For the life of me I don't know why they don't stick a price on some of them and make a little money. Anyway, the three books were:

  • Home to Holly Springs by Jan Karon - have you read her "Mitford Series"? Great reads. This is the first book of her "Father Timothy Series". He was featured in the Mitford books, but it's him going back to the town he was raised in. This was my $2 book.
  • Crazy Horse and Custer by Stephen E. Ambrose - One of the free books. Unfortunately I don't know much about Custer and Crazy horse, so grabbed this one. No, I've never read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. That's about Crazy Horse and Custer isn't it? See, I really need to read up on this!
  • Saddlebag Parson by Sara Jenkins - I leafed through it and it looked like a nice story so I picked it up. The price was right - $0! I don't even know if it has to do with a Parson or not. I'll let you know.

So, that makes three today, one the other day and three books that I ordered on Amazon. I have got to stop this and start reading. I have a ton of books at home that have never been read either. HELP! My name is "Tim" and I am a bookaholic!

What's On Your Reading List?
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Family

First let me tell you what the Tinkel family has been reading lately.

I just finished reading Glenn Beck's Common Sense, and Martin Luther by Basil Miller. Loved them both! I'm going to try to begin writing short reviews of the books that I read in order to keep me on my toes, so be looking for my reviews for these two great books in the coming days.

What am I reading now? Well, I'm still reading 1776 by David McCullough but I've also added The FairTax Book by Neil Boortz and Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford. I began Of Plymouth Plantation some time ago, but put it aside for a while. I picked it back up again because of...you guessed it...Thanksgiving. It's kind of my secondary history book right now until I finish 1776, but since 1776 is going pretty quickly, hopefully I will complete it soon.

What's coming up for me? Well, I just ordered three books on Amazon, and found another at a used book store. I think you'll find at least one of the new books an interesting choice but you'll have to find out  next time what it is. I'm not revealing it yet.

John Allen absolutely flew through the fifth installment of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He liked it, but it's nothing compared to how he raved about The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare! That has become his new number one book. He is now recommending it to everyone. I couldn't believe how he took to it! He will definitely be writing a review on it and I will be putting on here soon. I'm so glad that he has a love for reading!

What is he reading now? Well, he put aside The Cat of Bubastes in order to read the two mentioned above. He loves "The Cat", and is enjoying it once again. He's also reading a Mary Pope Osborne book Ancient Greece and the Olympics for school. The next book that I am going to present to him is Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman. I think he'll like it. I'll let you know.

Joshua is actually reading ~ a little at a time, mind you, but he is reading ~ Benjamin Franklin - Inventor, Statesman, and Patriot by R. Conrad Stein. I was surprised when we first began to read it. It is a little more advanced than the books we usually read. He actually liked it and wanted to read more once we got started. I was really thrilled.

So, what are you all reading? Leave me a comment and let me know. If you are interested in any of the books that I just mentioned. I have created a couple of new widgets in my left hand column connecting to Amazon and Vision Forum. All of the books mentioned above are available from those two distributors. Enjoy and happy reading!

Currclick - I'm not just a one dimensional person!
Mood:  happy
Topic: Affiliates

You may think that the only things that I like are BCM International, Compassion International and The Old Schoolhouse (TOS) magazine and store. However, I am not as one dimensional as you might think. There are other things that I like as well. One of them being Currclick.

If you are interested in your child's education at all then you will like this website. It has tons of homeschool resources from dozens of companies. The only thing not big about this site is the cost! They have some of the lowest prices for homeschool downloads that I have seen on the internet. And, to top it off, they are having a humongous sale for Cyber Monday. And, as if it could get any better, they are giving away 20 different homeschool items for free! I have taken advantage of this site for the past two years and have downloaded some fantastic free things that I have used over and over again. Currclick is definitely a great site. Check it out by clicking on the banner or on any one of the hi-lighted links. You won't be disappointed.
